On September 5, as part of a performance being organized by artist Sean Martindale at the Art Gallery of Ontario — which is currently hosting the Ai Weiwei survey “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” — 12 volunteers will have their heads shaved in an expression of solidarity for the artist and others who’ve been persecuted around the world. The performance, titled “Solidarity Buzz: Shaving for Free Expression,” will take place from 7-11:30pm on September 5 as part of the museum’s monthly First Thursdays event.
Ai has had his head forcibly shaved on at least two occasions: In 2009, after being attacked by Chinese police and suffering a hemorrhage in his brain that necessitated emergency surgery in Munich; and in 2011 his 81-day detainment by Chinese authorities. Participants in the performance — for which volunteers are still needed, FYI — will be able to have “before” and “after” photographs taken. Beyond acting as an organizer, Martindale, whom we’re assured has “shoulder-length hair,” will also be receiving an Ai Weiwei buzz cut.
