Following Aimia AGO Photography Prize’s recent announcement that New York photographic and film artist Laurie Simmons and internationally itinerant curator Okwui Enwezor were named to its 2014 panel, the leading Canadian prize for photography has released its longlist of 22 international photographic artists.
13 international photography experts chose the 22 longlisted artists and the three-person panel of Simmons, Enwezor, and Art Gallery of Ontario associate curator of photography, Sophie Hackett will choose four finalists. The ultimate victor is chosen by the public. The Aimia Prize (formerly named the Grange Prize) demonstrates a bias for Canadian artists (five appear on the longlist, this year), perhaps in anticipation of its requirement that at least one Canadian artist be selected for the shortlist.
The four finalists’ works will be exhibited at the AGO in an exhibition opening on Sept. 3, 2014, and each artist will receive a fully-funded six-week residency in Canada. The public can vote online beginning on Aug. 13, 2014. The winner will receive $50,000 CAD.
